About this book
Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now?
Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband has left her, and her professional life is going nowhere. Regardless of why Evelyn has selected her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career.
Summoned to Evelyn’s luxurious apartment, Monique listens in fascination as the actress tells her story. From making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the ‘80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way, Evelyn unspools a tale of ruthless ambition, unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love. Monique begins to feel a very real connection to the legendary star, but as Evelyn’s story near its conclusion, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique’s own in tragic and irreversible ways.

If I'm perfectly honest, this is not a book I would have picked up by myself if it hadn't been recommended to me by different sources. I normally don't gravitate towards romance or glamour books and at first glance, this was one of those books.
Don't get me wrong: it is! It most certainly is all you expect it to be: the glamorous and scandalous life of a Hollywood film star, with all the drama and passion it can muster.
But it is more and this made me actually like this book. The characters, especially the character of Evelyn Hugo, is much more layered, and troubled, than I had expected at first. This book doesn't sugarcoat and at times, I had flashbacks to the Netflix-Monroe-biopic 'Blonde'.
At times, it can be a tad predictable and I know there are some issues with the entitled representation of different groups. I can see why, but will not go deeper into it, because of the spoilers. I do encourage you to read up on a few articles of people who are better placed than I myself to explain why, once you have read the book.
All in all, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo was a good, accessible read that I, surprisingly, liked. If you are into the romance and glamour genres, you will probably love this book.
